Smart Sleep Calculator is a free sleep science tool and educational resource. We are not a medical practice, healthcare provider, or subscription service. We build and operate sleep calculators, nap calculators, and sleep science guides for general public use.

02 — Comments

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site, we collect the data shown in the comments form, including the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymised string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available at automattic.com/privacy. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Cookies are small text files stored on your device by your browser. We use cookies for functional purposes (keeping you logged in, remembering your comment details) and analytics. We do not use advertising cookies without your explicit consent.

Comment cookies

If you leave a comment on our site, you may opt in to saving your name, email address, and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies last for one year.

Login cookies

If you visit our login page, we set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we set several cookies to save your login information and screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days; screen options cookies last for one year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login persists for two weeks. When you log out, the login cookies are removed.

Article editing cookies

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie is saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after one day.

05 — Embedded Content

Embedded Content from Other Websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (for example: videos, images, articles). Embedded content from other websites behaves in exactly the same way as if the visitor had visited that other website directly.

These external websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content — including if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Who We Share Your Data With

We do not sell, trade, or rent your personal data to third parties.

If you request a password reset, your IP address will be included in the reset email sent by WordPress. We may also share data with the following service types where necessary to operate the site:

• Spam detection services — visitor comment data (IP, user agent, comment text) may be checked through an automated spam detection service (e.g. Akismet)
• Analytics providers — anonymised usage data may be shared with analytics services. No personally identifiable information is shared with analytics providers
• Hosting provider — your IP address is processed by our hosting infrastructure as a standard part of serving web pages
• Gravatar (Automattic) — a hash of your email may be sent to Gravatar to retrieve your profile image when you comment. See Automattic’s privacy policy

07 — Data Retention

How Long We Retain Your Data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognise and approve any follow-up comments automatically, rather than holding them in a moderation queue.

For users who register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information provided in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

08 — Your Rights

What Rights You Have Over Your Data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you.

This does not include data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where Your Data Is Sent

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service. Comment data including content, IP address, and user agent string may be transmitted to and processed by this service.

Our website is hosted on servers based in the United States. If you are visiting from outside the US, your data may be transferred to, stored, and processed in the United States, where data protection laws may differ from those in your country.

We take reasonable steps to ensure that any international data transfers are made in accordance with applicable privacy law, including using providers with appropriate data processing agreements in place.
